Recently, we received an urgent call about two kangaroos stranded in a paddock at the Nestlé factory in Campbellfield.
These curious boys likely wandered in when the gates opened for staff early morning – but they found themselves stuck with no way out except via the busy Hume Highway.
With houses on one side, a train line at the rear, and no water in sight, time was ticking to get them to safety.
Rescue – Round One
Enter Dr Alistair, who faced a tricky challenge: there were no hiding spots to approach the roos unseen. Using the car to minimise stress, he darted one of them from the stationary vehicle, but the second kangaroo couldn’t be located. As night fell and due to the vast site, we had to call it a night. The first boy was taken away for recovery in the closest safe reserve and was monitored until he hopped off.
Rescue – Round Two
The next morning, Mel joined the team, and after another round of strategic darting (and patience!), the second kangaroo found himself in a locked section of the paddock. Under veterinarian Alistair’s supervision, Mel successfully darted him.
He was assessed and safely released into the same location. We are confident their pals will find each other.
