Stray and Injured Dogs

Learn how Vets for Compassion helps stray dogs, and dogs in emergencies.

Vets for Compassion is the only veterinary organisation in Victoria dedicated to helping wildlife, companion animals, and farm animals alike. Nearly one-third of the animals we help are companion animals — and our volunteer vets and rescuers are there for them every step of the way.

Our companion animal services include:

  • Humane capture of stray cats and dogs across Melbourne
  • Emergency animal rescue and veterinary treatment during floods, bushfires, and disease outbreaks
  • Shelter veterinary care, providing cats and dogs awaiting adoption with the treatment they need, in partnership with Forever Friends Animal Rescue
  • De-sexing programs to support responsible pet population management

How You Can Help Dogs

  • Adopt, don’t shop — healthy dogs die in pounds because of over-breeding. You can save a life by adopting instead of purchasing from a breeder
  • De-sex your dog — to avoid contributing to over-breeding
  • If you find a lost dog, take them to your local vet — it’s the fastest way to make sure they are re-united with their people
