Stray and Injured Cats

Learn how Vets for Compassion helps stray cats, and cats in emergencies.

Vets for Compassion is the only veterinary organisation in Victoria dedicated to helping wildlife, companion animals, and farm animals alike. Nearly one-third of the animals we help are companion animals — and our volunteer vets and rescuers are there for them every step of the way.

Our companion animal services include:

  • Humane capture of stray cats and dogs in Melbourne
  • Emergency animal rescue and veterinary treatment during floods, bushfires, and disease outbreaks
  • Shelter veterinary care, providing cats and dogs awaiting adoption with the treatment they need, in partnership with Forever Friends Animal Rescue
  • De-sexing programs to support responsible pet population management

How You Can Help Cats

  • Adopt, don’t shop — healthy cats die in pounds because of over-breeding. You can save a life by adopting instead of purchasing from a breeder
  • De-sex your cat — to avoid contributing to over-breeding
  • Keep your pet cat indoors — it keeps them safe from cars and other dangers, and protects native wildlife
