Right now, across Victoria, native animals are being cut off from the habitats they depend on. Roads and developments divide the landscapes they’ve always moved through – to feed, to find water, to raise their young. The result is heartbreaking and preventable: animals injured and killed, families separated, and populations of the species that make Victoria unique quietly disappearing.

At Vets for Compassion, our volunteer veterinary and rescuer team see it firsthand. We’re there for the animals who don’t make it across and for the ones we can still save.

But treating the injured isn’t enough. We want to help stop the harm before it happens.

• Establishing a connected network of protected wildlife corridors across Victoria
• Investing in wildlife-safe road infrastructure, including fauna crossings, underpasses, overpasses, guiding fencing, and trials of virtual fencing (roadside animal-detection systems) at high-risk sites
• Introducing and enforcing reduced speed zones in identified wildlife areas, to protect both animals and drivers
• Protecting and restoring the native vegetation that connects fragmented habitats, prioritising areas with high wildlife activity and known road incidents
• Funding ongoing monitoring, maintenance and community education to keep these corridors effective for the long term
