The call came in at 5am. A kind local who had spotted a dead wombat on the side of the road.

Our rescuers Ian and Martha knew there wasn’t a moment to spare. As they approached in their vehicle, they could see a tiny joey moving.

“He was practically waving us down for help,” Martha said.

As they bent down to retrieve the tiny joey from his dead mother’s pouch, they noticed her body was frozen. The little joey wouldn’t have survived much longer without our emergency response.

Ian and Martha quickly wrapped the tiny wombat joey up, before gently moving his mother’s body into the nearby bushland to rest.

The wombat joey, named Moonpie, was checked over by vets and then taken to a local carer. He’s doing well in care.
