We received an urgent call from Tony, a Sorrento resident on the Mornington Peninsula. A wallaby had become displaced and trapped in a fenced garden near a busy traffic-filled main road – a dangerous situation for our wildlife friend!
With Mel and Jason on the case, they navigated the heavy traffic and arrived within an hour. The wallaby was found hiding behind a shed and fence, and we had to move carefully to avoid scaring him into traffic. To make matters trickier, it was a warm day and keeping the wallaby calm was critical to prevent overheating.
Under veterinary supervision, Mel lined up a precision tranquiliser dart through dense branches and shrubs in a narrow gap – and succeeded!
The wallaby peacefully fell asleep and was carefully removed from his tangled hiding spot, complete with a retaining wall drop-off. His eyes were protected with a special mask, and he received a thorough health check, including eye ointment for a mild cut on the eyelid, hydration fluids, vitamins, and worming treatment.
Later that day, the wallaby was transported to a wildlife shelter for observation and recovery. He recovered well, enjoying fresh grass and getting the care he needed to bounce back.
