Wildlife Rescuer – Emma

Ever wondered what it takes to be a wildlife rescuer?

Meet some of our passionate heroes whose journey started with a love for animals and a heart full of compassion. Our next hero is Emma!

From passion to profession

I’ve always been passionate about animal welfare. Growing up with animals and joining Animal Liberation Victoria in 2009 set me on this path. Becoming a qualified vet nurse and gaining experience at places like Healesville Sanctuary and Emergency and Critical Care have shaped my journey. In 2016, I started volunteering at a friend’s wildlife shelter, eventually becoming a registered foster carer and now a Shelter Operator with my own Wildlife Shelter. Vets For Compassion (VFC) have been incredible, providing education, networking, and the practical skills to rescue a wide range of animals in need.

Challenges and triumphs

The biggest challenge? Managing public expectations during rescues. Many don’t realise the personal, financial, and emotional toll it takes. Yet, the support and knowledge from VFC keep me going. Without them, burnout would have been inevitable.

Heart-warming rescues

One special rescue was a wombat joey named Charlotte. Her innocence and sweetness reminded me of the profound lesson’s animals teach us every day. She’s moved on, but she’ll always hold a special place in my heart.

Advice for those looking to get involved?

Reach out to groups that inspire you. Find local mentors and ask wildlife shelters how you can help. Even small acts like fund-raising or habitat building make a big difference. Knowledge is power – support your local animal advocates and learn how to protect our wildlife.

Our vision for the future

We hope future generations will be kinder and more compassionate. We envision a world where local councils plant native trees, build wildlife corridors, and advocate for better animal welfare. Stand up for what you believe in – together, we can make a difference.

Stay tuned for more updates and join us in making the world a better place for our furry, feathered, and scaly friends!
