A new large fire has started in the region, and conditions remain extremely challenging.
Yesterday, our team had to cease work by late morning due to the high-risk conditions. Locals in Horsham have reported ash falling, with the Little Desert fire now nearly as large as the Grampians fire that burned from Halls Gap to Dunkeld.
We’re staying vigilant and ready to assist as soon as it’s safe.

Bushfire Response: Vets for Compassion in the Grampians
Our First Response and Needs Assessment Team were deployed to the Grampians, answering the call to provide urgent veterinary care to wildlife impacted by the devastating bushfires.
With the invitation and guidance of local wildlife carer Pam Turner from Wildwood Wildlife Shelter – Gariwerd we’ve been working on private properties – only with the consent of the landowners – to assess and treat animals in need.
The incredible teams from DEECA’s WESN have been tirelessly combing through the national parks over the past month; two of our Vets, Dr Tash Bassett and Dr Jaclyn Gatt, were part of the DEECA teams. Now, it’s our turn to continue to help bring hope to injured and displaced wildlife.
Our First Response Team (including vets, darters and rescuers) are working incredibly hard to perform search and rescue. Thank you to our Needs Assessment team made up of Dr Audrey Shen, Oliver and Nicole, who gave up their jobs to do this important work. Your dedication is admirable.
To the local rescuers/carers Emma and Lotus, you are making such a difference to the many animals in need.
In wildfires, the animals flee and take refuge in unburnt private properties, often congregating around dams or taking refuge where it is safe and where there is food.
Sadly, many of the animals are too severely burnt or injured to save – suffering from horrific burns to vital parts of their body. They have been humanely euthanise to end their suffering.
The rescued ones have been taken to the wildlife shelter for treatment and care.
We’re also grateful to work alongside Shelly at Hamilton Wildlife Shelter in this critical response. We’re committed to providing care to those who need it most.
Stay tuned for updates as we continue this vital mission to protect and heal our precious wildlife.
A huge thanks to our volunteer rescuers for their commitment to this challenging rescue.
