Since arriving in the Grampians, we’ve worked closely with Wildwood Wildlife Shelter – Gariwerd. Many of you have asked about Pam’s and the animals in her care’s safety – here’s what’s been happening.

As a precaution, we helped safely evacuate all the small animals. But later this week, we got the urgent call – back-burning was starting that evening, directly outside the property. We had to act fast.

Alongside Pam, Lou from Animals Australia, Julie Campagnaro, and dedicated local volunteers, we worked tirelessly through the night to evacuate the remaining macropods and emus in Pam’s care. Thanks to Shelly from Hamilton Wildlife Shelter -Victoria Australia, who took the evacuated wallabies late at night to help them recover.

It was a massive effort, and we didn’t get to bed until 7am, but we’re relieved that Pam and the animals in care made it out safely.

We are all concerned for the free-living adult kangaroos and their young who live at the shelter. Sadly, relocating released, semi-wild adult kangaroos is nearly impossible, as macropods cannot be herded. Darting and relocating adults and their at-heel joeys to safety is a slow, long process that would have to be done one at a time – time that we don’t have. So now we wait.

Pam and her volunteers return daily to check on them while it’s safe. They have lots of food and water and are doing well. We are keeping our fingers crossed for the best possible outcome as the weather conditions deteriorate today.

We’ll keep you updated in the coming days. Thank you for your continued support – it means the world to us and the animals we’re fighting for.

We need your help more than ever! Help us continue this critical rescue work in times of tragedy – donate today.
