When a distressed kangaroo was spotted pacing the top level of the Mooroolbark train station car park, our team knew the stakes were high. With the risk of him leaping from the roof or hopping back onto busy roads or train tracks, time was of the essence!

Rescuers Vicki, Narida, and Jacquie raced to the scene, joined by Dr Elaine, who prioritised this tricky mission amidst a day of urgent calls.
The experienced rescuers kept the kangaroo contained by using cars to prevent him from hopping down the ramp on the level below. However, the challenge remained: how to dart him safely without causing panic and potentially hopping over the walls of the top level. Blocking the rooftop was impossible, as the team could not go past him without scaring him.
The car park staff were instructed only to allow people to come up further than the floor below us, and no one came through the doors to enter the carpark.
Dr Elaine took a very slow and methodical approach, carefully navigating and moving closer behind pillars to stay out of sight. Finally, she got within 10 metres with precision and patience and successfully darted him.
After falling asleep, the kangaroo was thoroughly examined.

He was found to be healthy, with only mildly worn pads to our relief. He received multivitamin injections and was transported to the release site. When he was partially awake and swallowing, he was fed the worming syrup (which he happily drank!) before being released to a safe reserve to join a mob of roos.

Thanks to our rescuers’ incredible teamwork and expertise, another life was saved, and this beautiful kangaroo is now back where he belongs.
A huge thanks to our volunteer rescuers for their commitment to this challenging rescue.
