New home for Koala stuck near busy road

When Gihan spotted a confused koala attempting to cross a busy road at 80km/h while on his bike, he didn’t hesitate to become a true wildlife hero!

Risking his safety, he teamed up with another kind-hearted member of the public to stop traffic and guide the koala across the road. But with only one unsuitable tree in sight and danger all around, Gihan knew more help was needed.

Enter Victoria Police and Vets for Compassion!

After receiving the call, our amazing team – Jason and Brendan – rushed to the scene. Armed with a ladder and determination, Brendan climbed four metres to rescue the cranky but confused koala, who wasn’t thrilled about the impromptu handling (understandable!).

Safely secured in a transport cage, this little wanderer was whisked away to Animalia Wildlife Shelter for overnight care and a health check.

The next day, with a clean bill of health, Jason released the koala into a lush, safe space far from any busy roads or urban hazards. As the koala climbed his chosen tree and gazed down, it felt like he was saying thank you.

This heart-warming rescue is a reminder of the impact of urban development on our precious native wildlife and the power of community, compassion, and quick action.

A massive shout out to Gihan, Victoria Police, and the incredible team at Animalia Wildlife Shelter. You’ve all given this koala a second chance at a wild and happy life. A huge thanks to our volunteer rescuers for their commitment to this challenging rescue.
