Who remembers our very first save after weeks of nothing but heartbreak?
Many weeks ago, Dr Audrey and darter Oliver came across a little wallaby in the fire zone – her burns were minor, but she had a painful toe infection. She was our first beacon of hope after so much devastation.
Thanks to our triage van (generously donated by Animals Australia) and the incredible care of @HamiltonWildlifeShelter, this little fighter received weeks of TLC, ongoing vet care, and all the love in the world.

And now? She’s back where she belongs! After a full recovery, she was recently released to continue raising the tiny pinky growing in her pouch.
It was an emotional moment for Audrey and Oliver – a reminder of why we do what we do. Seeing her hop away, strong and free, was the perfect ending to her story. Just look at that happy face!

Help us continue these lifesaving rescues. Donate today or leave a gift in your Will to ensure we’re always there for wildlife in need.
If you spot any wildlife impacted by the bushfires in or near the national parks, please call the DEECA hotline at 1300 356 682. DEECA’s Wildlife Coordinator and Wildlife Field Assessment Teams are on the ground, working to assess and assist fire-affected animals.
VFC volunteers only work on private properties adjacent to the fire-affected areas, where fires have long been extinguished, and only when contacted by property owners for assistance.
