Grampian Bushfire Wildlife Rescues

Through long days, sleepless nights, and heartbreaking rescues, our rescue team two has given their all to help wildlife caught in this devastating bushfire crisis.

Emma, Brendan, Jacob, and Dr Alistair – your dedication, resilience, and compassion have made an incredible impact. Your efforts have been extraordinary, from trekking through burnt landscapes to searching for survivors to dart, assessing injured animals, and making the most challenging decisions with kindness.

This work is physically and emotionally exhausting, but you’ve shown up daily, putting our wildlife first. We appreciate you. And we couldn’t do this without you.

Everyone puts on a brave face every day, but deep down, there is sadness and despair sometimes, as some animals are almost impossible to catch, and despair to hear that the new fires are raging in the travelling Northeast and new areas are affected (latest update February 3).

Signs of hope

Against all odds, a lone survivor emerged from the ashes – brave, resilient, and a symbol of hope.

With the land around them blackened and lifeless, a beautiful kangaroo defied the devastation, somehow able to flee to safety and avoid being burnt, in a place where so many were badly burnt. Her feet, tail, breathing pattern and behaviour were observed by our vet and were deemed to be fine.

She took a moment to take it all in before hopping away, a reminder of the roo’s incredible strength.

In the face of such heartbreak, moments like this keep us going.
