Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a wildlife rescuer?
Meet some of our passionate heroes whose journey started with a love for animals and a heart full of compassion, our next hero Oliver.

Why animal rescue? Growing up in South Africa sparked my passion for wildlife and nature. When I moved to Melbourne in 2019, I wanted to continue volunteering, and I chose animal rescue over CFA and SES. After taking a basic rescue course, I found my true calling!
Memorable rescue
One unforgettable rescue was a young Eastern Grey Kangaroo trapped in a Warrandyte backyard. With Dr Chris’s help, the joey was reunited with his mum. It was heart-warming and reminded me why we do this!
Challenges
Reaching injured animals in tricky spots and dealing with the emotional toll are tough. But our training, teamwork, and the joy of successful rescues keep us going!
Daily life
Being a rescuer means flexibility and a strong support system. The community’s gratitude and seeing animals return to their natural habitats motivate me!
Special bonds
Each rescue forms a unique bond. Each animal holds a special place in my heart, from the first Grey-Headed Flying Fox pup to my first kangaroo joey.
Advice to get involved
Start with a basic wildlife rescue course through Wildlife Victoria or The Wildlife Rescuers. Be patient, compassionate, and resilient. Every small action contributes to wildlife conservation.
Community support:
- Volunteer with rescue organisations or shelter
- Donate money, blankets, or feeding supplies
- Spread awareness about wildlife conservation
- Report injured wildlife
- Advocate for protective policies
- Reduce plastic use and support eco-friendly products
- Participate in fundraisers and events
Future goals: I hope for increased public awareness, more involvement in rescue efforts, better funding, and a community that respects and protects wildlife.
Stay tuned for more updates and join us in making the world a better place for our furry, feathered, and scaly friends!
