Project Description:

During the terrible devastation of these 2022 floods in NSW, our team was asked to assist with the mammoth effort of assisting the DPI (Department of Primary Industries) and the LLS (Local Land Services) with the enormous task of rescuing and treatment of ALL animals.

In total, a team of 43 volunteer Vets and nurses from NSW and Victoria were recruited to take turns to assist for a month.

Our triage van (donated by Animals Australia after the Mallacoota fires) and our 2 4-wheel drives were driven up north.

We set up a triage van at the golf course (central to town where the locals can get there on foot) and saw all species including cats, dogs, chickens, ducks and rabbits). We assisted the 3 local vet clinics that were inoperable due to flooding by providing vet support and delivering supplies that they needed.

Over 200 cats dogs and other small animals were treated by our Vets and nurses at the van.

Our Vets and nurses also assisted at the Local evacuation centre at the University where dozens of homeless people were living with their pets.

After 2 weeks the local Vets were ready to be operational again, we moved our triage van to Coraki where there was much needed work to be done.

At the same time over a month, we had 2 mobile large animal teams on the road.

Covering a large area, we assisted in over 90 farms with cattle, goats, ad sheep also assisted with equine treatment work.

We covered areas in Woodburn, Coraki, Swan Bay, Buckendoon, Dungarubba, Cabbage Tree Island, Palmers Island, Wardell, Ballina, Alstonville, Casino, Grafton, Lawrence, and others.

Much of this work was heartbreaking, seeing the very sick and injured  cattle, horses, and other species.

Many farmers were also in distress having lost their homes and their animals.

We are grateful to the professionalism of all our volunteer vets and nurses who worked hard in difficult circumstances.

Thanks also to the Local Land Services who communicated well and gave us assignments to different places and farms. It was a prime and shining example of efficient and professional cooperation between Government and Professional NGOs.
